Simon Peter Graham

Simon Peter Graham, born  17 August 1834, in Virginia, and died 20 Feb.
1898 in Grundy  County, Tenn., who was the father of Virginia  Lee Graham.
Simon Peter's father was John H. Graham, born 1800, his mother was Elizabeth, born in 1808, and died in March 1862.  His brothers and sisters were: John R. Graham, born in 1831, Eliza Graham born in 1832,  George W. Graham born in 1833, Susan R. Graham born in 1838,  Susan married a GarlandCharles Graham born in 1840, married   Sara Ann.
Notes handed down list a brother, James W. Graham , born 1824, died  14
February  1908.

The Civil War started  on 12 April 1861,  one month later, on 13th of
May 1861
,  at age twenty six years and about nine months ,  Simon P. enlisted
for the war,  as   a Virginia  Volunteer,  in  Salem, Virginia, as a
Private, Co. I - 28 Regimentt, Virginia Infantry  as an  Artilleryman. However,
in Feb. 1862,  he was  transferred to Wagoner, then  later documents stated;
Teamster. He was  hauling supplies for the troops, under the command of
General Robert E. Lee, who took over after General Joseph E. Johnston was
wounded.  Since we have documents of S. P. Graham receiving  his pay at
Manassas Junction, in June 1861, leads us to believe that he may have fought
in that battle, called Manassas or  Bull Run, as he was classified as
artillery man at that time.  General   Beauregard was in charge when this
battle was fought.

Some of the names appearing on his Company Muster Roll were: Capt. M.
P. Deyerle, Capt. Holt,  Maj. Ball, A. W. Williams, and  ?. M. Danville

These dates and places  listed below,  were where Simon P. Graham was
stationed and   wrote letters home to Martha Stamback.  The North and  South,
both  paid their enlisted men  $11.00 per month, in the beginning,. Later the
South  raised theirs to  $18.00  per  month,  in  confederate  money.

1.   In some old letters, some of Simon P. Graham's children mentioned  "Aunt Nannie"   on several occasions.  Velma McElhaney King remembers that
Aunt Nannie's name was Nannie Guyear (Garr). I learned that this  person was
Martha Stamback Graham's sister.  Velma McElhaney King  remembers  that  Aunt Nannie  had a son named Price , and  his wife was named Ellen.  Also that
Aunt Nannie was living with Price when she died, about 1923 or 24.

 2.     May 15,  1862 - Chickanormay, Va.  ?   Could this have been Chickahominy River, or the Battle of Seven Days?
3.     Simon Peter Graham was in the area, when this  battle was being
fought,  in December 1862.  He had been put on duty  as Regiment Wagoner Feb.1862, and some time later to Teamster.  The World Book Encyclopedia's account; General Ambrose E. Burnside led an attack against General Robert E. Lee at Fredricksburg. It was on this occasion that Lee made a  statement that has since become famous. Fog covered the battle field early in the morning before the battle began. As it lifted and the Confederate command surveyed the panorama of thousands of troops in full array, Lee remarked: "It is well that war is so terrible -- we would grow too fond of it". Lee's troops defeated the Union forces at this time, but could  not take advantage of the victory, because of being  out  numbered by  the  Northern troops, and the Confederates had few reserves of men and supplies.

Simon Peter Graham
Co.  I    28 Regt.
Hunton's Brigade
Picket Div.                           Garnett's Brigade
Richmond, Va.                       Virginia Volunteers

On  the Aug. 31, 1861,   Company Muster Roll,  Simon Peter Graham was
listed as Pvt.  Co K. 28 Reg't Virginia  Inf.   This company subsequently became Company I,  28th Regiment Virginia Infantry.  The 28th Regiment Virginia Infantry was accepted into the service of the Confederate States July  1, 1861, with ten companies, A to K.  (1st) Company E had been transferred from the Regiment in June 1861, and subsequently became Company C,  11th Regiment Virginia Infantry. (1st) Company C was transferred to the artillery service about August 20, 1861, and finally became Capt. John R. Johnston's Company Virginia Light Artillery.    Company H  was reorganized as an artillery organization December 24, 1861, and finally became Capt.  Douthat's Company  Virginia Light Artillery. The regiment was reorganized about May 1, 1862, with nine companies.

The document  shown below of Simon P. Graham's  may have been when he
left the service.  At least we don't have anything dated after this.  (I have
learned that some old letters, which Simon Peter wrote to his sweetheart
during the Civil War are still intact, and are in the possession of a great
granddaughter, Billie Faye Hampton Myers)

It seems reasonable to believe that Simon P. married after he  returned
home from the war. However,  if the marriage date (Mar.  2,  1865)  which we
have is correct, the war was not officially over until a short time later.
Grant and Lee met on April 9, 1865, to arrange surrender terms. Then Johnston
surrendered on April 26, 1865,  Taylor surrendered May 4, 1865, and then on
May 26, 1865 General Edmund Kirby- Smith surrendered the last Confederate
army in the field, and the war was over.

Simon Peter Graham's Marriage, and Family

I.     Simon Peter Graham, b. 17 Aug. 1834 in Virginia,  d. 20 Feb. 1898, in
Grundy Co. Tenn., married in Roanoke,  Virginia,   on  2 March 1865 to Martha
Stamback b.  3 March 1842, in Virginia ,  d.  18 Aug. 1903.    Both are
buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery ,  Tracy City, Tenn.

The 1850 census of Roanoke County, Virginia, list:   (1.)  Benjamin Stamback
age 42, born in Virginia (Birthdate 1808) (There is a three year difference
in the  age of Benjamin Stamback on this    census report, and the 1880
census).  (2.) Peggy age 28, (wife, 14 years younger than Benjamin, her
birthdate 1822)    (3.)  Patsy, age 8,  (birthdate 1842)    (4.) Nancy, age
6, (birthdate 1844)  (5.) Leroy, age 4, (birthdate 1846)    (6.)  Richard,
age 2, (birthdate 1848)    (7.) Sarah A.  age 9/12  (birthdate 1849)

The next census, which I have found is the 1880 one. That leaves us with 30
years unaccounted for. There may have been another child or two born between
1849, and when the next one shows up in 1880 , Susan N. age 25 (birthdate
1855).  At this time  Benjamin's  wife, Peggy, had died, probably before they
left Virginia.

The 1880 census of Lincoln County, Tenn., list Benjamin Stamback age 69,
farmer, born in Virginia, his father born in Pennsylvania, his mother born in
Virginia. Living in his household was: ( 1.  Susan N., daughter, age 25,
keeping house, born in Virginia as were both of her parents.)   (2.  George
P., son, age 23, working on farm, he and both parents born in Virginia)

(3. Benjamin A., age 21, farmer, he and both parents born in Virginia.)  This
was Martha Stamback's father and siblings.

Since we don't  have Martha's name on the census report, we can only assume
that she ma y have been called Patsy, as that is the daughter listed as
having been born in 1842, which is Martha Stamback's  birthdate

Charles S.,   Laura
Ann,   Virginia Lee,  Sarah Florence,   Benjamin Walter,  George W.

Simon Peter Graham  decided to leave Roanoke, or Roanoke Co., Virginia,
within two years after the Civil War was over.  From census records we know
that Mary Susan, born 10 Dec,. 1865  and Charles Simon  on   2 Nov. 1867, in
Virginia  and Laura  A. was born in Tennessee on 6 May 1870.  They had to
have come between these dates" 1867 --1870".   We don't  know exactly how
many family members made the trip.  Martha, his wife, and two  children,  and
if the  notes meant that James W. and Charles were his brothers. (We know his
mother was already dead,  some   hand written notes; state that she died in
March 1882, but we don't  know when his father died). It is not known if he
knew where he was going to, only that he traveled  westward,  but taking a
somewhat southerly  route, and was in Lincoln County, Tenn.,  in 1880, but
had gone over or back over into Alabama  when Benjamin Walter was born in
1878.   In addition was Martha's father,  Benjamin Stamback, age  69,  a
daughter,  Susan N., age 25,( I guess this was the person    called Aunt
Nannie Garr (Guyear),   also two brothers George P., age 23, and Benjamin A.
, age 21.              ( These dates from 1880 census of Lincoln County,
Tenn.)
.
The remembered stories are that some point during this time Simon Peter
drove a wagon, hauling convicts to work in the coal mines.   That may have
been the reason he ended up  at  Tracy City, Tennessee -  Grundy County,
where he remained for the rest of his life.

Daughter, Virginia Lee  told stories, about remembering the trip to
Tracy City,  from where  ever they were, perhaps Lincoln County, Tenn., and
on one occasion they stopped, and camped at a spring.   Also she had been
told that she was named Virginia for the state of Virginia and Lee for
General Robert E. Lee, who Simon Peter Graham served under during the Civil
War.

I would welcome any corrections and additions you could supply.
